Extending the visual range of underwater ROVs with sonars

Underwater ROVs are an excellent tool for conducting underwater inspections. However, sometimes the water quality is not ideal. Integrating a sonar on an ROV will allow the operator to extend their vision beyond what the underwater drone camera sees, thus making navigation and operations easier and more efficient.

Sonar is not new tech in most marine and aquatic industries, so adapting these tools to an ROV platform makes perfect sense. Underwater sonars are used for data collection, navigation, obstacle avoidance, and target identification. Combining sonar data with still images and video from the ROV camera(s) gives the operator a complete overview of the situation. When choosing a sonar system to equip an ROV with, there are some factors to consider. It mainly depends on your use case, prior knowledge, and budget.

Join our digital event on 31st March to know more about different sonars and their use cases.

Ben Grant and Asser Awaad from Impact Subsea, and Mike Broadbent from Tritech International Limited will be joining as guest speakers for the event.
