Customer story
Onboard the coast guard
We’ve only had it for a few months, but we’ve used it for significant tasks, including inspecting damage on our own ship. The ROV has helped us identify issues and get them fixed quickly.

How it works
This is the Blueye ROV System
A ROV in the water, a tether to the surface, and wireless control from shore or boat. Share live video with everyone who needs to see the dive.
Blueye ROV
See below the surface with a ROV that is easy to handle and ready to deploy in minutes. Its stable design and onboard camera let you inspect, record and document your findings from the safety of shore or boat.
Explore the ROV models- Stable design and intuitive control
- Ready to deploy in minutes
- Clear underwater images and video
- Battery powered and easy to transport
- Designed and manufactured in Norway
Tether & Surface Unit
A light, robust tether carries video and control signals between the ROV and the surface unit. Built into the reel, the surface unit creates a local Wi-Fi network that connects the ROV to your controller and other devices on site.
Explore tethers and reels- Low-drag tether with 100 kg breaking strength
- Reel for easy transport and handling
- Battery-powered surface unit inside the reel
- Connect multiple devices over Wi-Fi
- Wired connection available with an Ethernet adapter
Controller & App
Operate the ROV with the Blueye App on a compatible phone or tablet, or use the Blueye Rugged Controller with its integrated tablet. Free on the App Store and Google Play, the app brings your live camera view, dive information and reporting together.

Why choose Blueye?
Underwater drones built for real-world operations
Reliable in demanding conditions
Built for steady operation in strong currents and environments with poor visibility. Maintain control and capture footage you can actually use for documentation.
Deploy in minutes
The system is light enough to carry to the water and quick to set up. That means shorter mobilisation and more inspections done in a working day.
Compact and easy to manoeuvre
A small footprint lets you work inside ballast tanks, between mooring lines and around structures where a larger ROV will not fit.
No specialist operators required
Operate the ROV with minimal training using an intuitive control system. Enable your team to perform inspections without relying on dedicated ROV pilots.

Frequently asked questions
Yes. "ROV" (Remotely Operated Vehicle) and "underwater drone" describe the same type of device: a tethered, remotely piloted vehicle used to inspect, document, and operate beneath the surface. At Blueye, we use both terms.
Blueye underwater ROVs are used to inspect, document, and monitor submerged assets and environments without sending a diver into the water – from ship hulls and fish pens to pipelines, harbors, and search-and-rescue operations.
It depends on depth, complexity, and equipment needs. The X1 suits light inspection tasks, the X3 Ultra offers 4K video and AI capabilities for advanced inspection, and the X7 is built for demanding operations in strong currents. You are always welcome to contact us and get tailored advice from our ROV specialists.
No. Blueye ROVs are designed for intuitive, day-to-day use without a dedicated pilot. For teams that want structured, hands-on training, Blueye also offers a dedicated ROV course.
ROVs are remotely piloted and tethered to an operator; AUVs (Autonomous Underwater Vehicles) operate independently without a tether; UUV is an umbrella term covering both; USVs (Uncrewed Surface Vehicles) operate on the surface rather than underwater. See our full guide to underwater vehicle types.
The X3 Ultra and X7 pair strong onboard lighting with a 4K HDR camera, holding clear detail in murky water or shadowed areas. With 8x zoom, pilots can inspect a weld seam or hull marking without moving the drone closer.
All Blueye ROVs support a range of payloads and accessories, including sonars, grippers, cameras and lights, to adapt the system to your specific operation.
Blueye ROVs are connected via a tether to ensure fast, reliable and stable connection between the operator and the drone, even in challenging environments. The tether sends video and sensor data to the surface in real time without depending on wireless signals that don't travel well underwater.
Observation class ROVs handle basic visual monitoring, while inspection class ROVs take on closer work, like measurements, sensor data, item recovery and light tasks with tools like sonars, grippers and mission planning. All Blueye ROVs (X1, X3 Ultra, and X7) are inspection class.
